New Legal Leaders Award: You are the future of law

Centro de Estudios Garrigues is proud to announce the second edition of the New Legal Leaders Award for students in the first and second years of their upper-secondary education.

The competition is split into two categories, with several prizes for students in the second year of their upper-secondary education and one prize for students in the first year. Students will have to write a paper on a current topic related to the application of new technologies to the field of law and business.

Who is it for?

The New Legal Leaders Award is open to students who are in the first or second year of their upper-secondary education (Spanish Baccalaureate, British Sixth Form, etc.) during the 2023/24 academic year.

Object

Centro de Estudios Garrigues is proud to announce the second edition of the New Legal Leaders Award for students in the first and second years of their upper-secondary education (Spanish Baccalaureate, British Sixth Form, etc.).

The competition is split into two categories, with several prizes for students in the second year of their upper-secondary education and one prize for students in the first year. Students will have to write a paper on a current topic related to the application of new technologies to the field of law and business.

In the ‘Second Year of Baccalaureate’ category, the first prize for best paper, awarded by a jury of experts convened for this purpose, will be a scholarship of 100 per cent tuition to study the first year of any bachelor’s degree at Centro de Estudios Garrigues (valued at €17,000), in addition to a mentoring programme.

The second prize awarded in this category will be a scholarship of 50 per cent tuition to study the first year of any bachelor’s degree at Centro de Estudios Garrigues (valued at €8,500).

Lastly, the third prize awarded in this category will be a scholarship of 20 per cent tuition to study the first year of any bachelor’s degree at Centro de Estudios Garrigues (valued at €3,400).

In the ‘First Year of Baccalaureate’ category, there will be a single prize awarded for best paper, consisting of a scholarship of 100 per cent tuition to study the first year of any bachelor’s degree at Centro de Estudios Garrigues (valued at €17,000).

Participant profile

The New Legal Leaders Award is open to students who are in the first or second year of their upper-secondary education (Spanish Baccalaureate, British Sixth Form, etc.) during the 2023/24 academic year.

Submission requirements

Participants must submit a single-authored paper on a current topic related to the application of new technologies to the field of law and business. This paper must meet the following requirements:

  • It must be written in Spanish or English.
  • It must be new and original.
  • It may not exceed ten pages in length (excluding cover page, annexes, etc.).
  • It must be in Times New Roman, 12 pt font size, single-spaced with 6 pt paragraph spacing, and 2.5 cm margins on the left, right, top, and bottom.
  • It must be submitted in PDF format and include the author’s details.

Application deadline

Students interested in participating in the New Legal Leaders Award must register — filling in the application form available on the Centro de Estudios Garrigues/New Legal Leaders Award website — no later than 26 April 2024.

Deadline to submit papers

The papers must be submitted by email to María Luisa Miralles (maria.luisa.miralles@centrogarrigues.com ) no later than 7 p.m. (CET) on 10 May 2024.

Each submission must be accompanied by:

• a copy of the student’s academic transcript for the first year of their upper-secondary education (Spanish Baccalaureate, British Sixth Form, etc.);

• a brief curriculum vitae.

Applications received after the deadline or which are incomplete will be rejected.

Prizes

The prizes will be awarded to the papers that receive the highest score in their category, as determined by the jury.

All prize-winners will be awarded scholarships (subject to applicable taxes) covering a percentage of the tuition to study the first year of any bachelor’s degree at Centro de Estudios Garrigues. That percentage is, for each category:

Second Year of Baccalaureate:

• first prize: 100%;

• second prize: 50%;

• third prize: 20%;

First Year of Baccalaureate:

• first prize: 100%.

The scholarships are only available for the first year of any of the bachelor’s degrees at Centro de Estudios Garrigues during the 2023/24 academic year. Prize-winners must provide proof, at the time of their admission, that they meet the academic requirements to access the bachelor’s degree programme.

Should the winner fail to fulfil any of the requirements set out in these terms and conditions, the prize will be awarded to the paper with the next highest score.

Jury

The submissions and papers accepted into the competition will be evaluated by a jury of renowned professionals and Centro de Estudios Garrigues faculty members.

The papers will be anonymised and the jury will evaluate the originality, clarity, synthesis, composition, and structure of the papers, as well as the complexity and quality of the proposals presented.

The jury’s decision will be final. There will be no right of appeal or complaint against it.

Any prize may be declared void if the jury considers that the papers submitted fail to meet the minimum criteria for the prize to be awarded.

Awarding of prizes

The prizes will be awarded at a public ceremony to be held in the second quarter of 2024. The precise date will be announced with sufficient advance notice.

Intellectual property

All prize-winning participants agree to transfer all intellectual property rights over their submissions exclusively to Centro de Estudios Garrigues, without any type of geographical limitation, for the entire legal term of the rights, including the right to transfer or license them to third parties (such transfers may be total or partial, exclusive or not, with or without compensation) and to make use of them via any channels, media, and/or formats.

The transfer includes, but is not limited to, rights to reproduce, distribute, disseminate to the public (including making them available to the public interactively and on demand), and modify the submissions (including the right to create derivative works) in any form and in any format, including hardback, trade paper, paperback, digital (e.g. on the Centro de Estudios Garrigues blog), periodicals, reviews, promotional editions, print on demand, or any other that Centro de Estudios Garrigues considers necessary to maximise the dissemination of the works.

Under no circumstances will the publication of the submissions entitle the authors to any kind of economic rights.

The transfer of rights regulated herein refers to the economic rights over the prize-winning submissions, but does not extend to any moral rights that may apply, which Centro de Estudios Garrigues will undertake to observe and respect.

Should Centro de Estudios Garrigues fail to publish the prize-winning submissions within a period of one (1) year from the date of notification of prizes, it will forfeit the exclusivity agreed herein and the prize-winning participants may, whether or not in partnership with Centro de Estudios Garrigues and/or third parties authorised by it, publish the prize-winning submissions.

Guarantees

All prize-winning participants agree to be liable to Centro de Estudios Garrigues as to the lawful exercise of the rights transferred by virtue of this document, affirming that they have not entered into and will not enter into any agreements or obligations of any kind and that the prize-winning works do not infringe and will not infringe on any third-party rights.

The prize-winning participants exonerate Centro de Estudios Garrigues from any liability and undertake to indemnify it against any judicial and/or extrajudicial claims arising from the non-fulfilment of the guarantees provided herein.

Moreover, the prize-winning participants undertake to sign any additional documents that may be requested by Centro de Estudios Garrigues to validate or confirm this transfer of rights.

Authorisation for the use of personal data

The personal data of participants in the award will be processed in accordance with the information provided in the registration forms and other specific documents containing information or consent to process the data in connection with the award. Participants must expressly authorise Centro de Estudios Garrigues to use their names and image for the sole purpose of promoting the award and publishing the submissions.

Agreement with the terms and conditions

Submission of a paper to this competition constitution constitutes full and unconditional acceptance of these terms and conditions.
